Southern Lee Cavaliers Football Week 1

Southern Lee Drops ‘26 Opener

A new season brought new hope for Southern Lee, but along with it came a relatively young roster. Sporting practically-new offensive and defensive lines, the Cavaliers headed to Spring Lake to face Overhills for their 2026 opener.

Southern Lee Junior QB Caleb Coro took the field to command the offense. The Cavaliers, with the benefit of a couple of early penalties on the home team Jaguars, found themselves in Overhills territory before their opening drive stalled. From there, Overhills took control of the game, and the Cavaliers young linemen found themselves struggling to answer Overhills’ power on both sides of the ball, eventually finding a victory by the margin of 52-0.

Long passes, big runs and smothering defense allowed Overhills to control the game, minus the first 6 minutes, eventually putting them ahead enough after halftime to force a running clock. Another unfortunate scenario for the Cavs saw their starting QB Caleb Coro go down early, forcing Southern Lee to turn to backup Gavin Shaffer.

For Southern Lee, in a large loss, it may be difficult to find highlights – but the Cavaliers showed some flashes of promise, especially from a handful of their younger members. With plenty of season left, Southern is far from a final product, with plenty of areas, but plenty of ability and enthusiasm, to grow and learn.

The Cavaliers return to action next Friday, August 28th, to host the Titans of South Garner.
